
Sun City is located 13 miles northwest of
downtown Phoenix in the West Valley and is in Central Arizona . It is in Maricopa County.
It covers 8,900 acres. Sun City West is a mirror image of Sun City. When Sun City was
built out in the early 1970's, Del Web headed four miles west and created Sun City West.
The Agua Fria River separates the two towns. Both Sun City and Sun City West are
retirement communities.
Sun City is rated one of the top retirement communities in the nation. It started with the
Del E. Webb Corporation in 1960. The corporation set out to develop a planned retirement
area. Today Sun City has a population of 59,489. It sits at an elevation of 1,200 feet.
The sunny, desert climate offers a summer high temperature of 105 degrees and a winter low
temperature of 37 degrees.
There are several nearby attractions that will appeal to those who enjoy the
arts. The Sundome Center for the Performing Arts in Sun City West attracts big name acts
to its stage. The center is the largest single level auditorium in the United States and
seats 7,100. The Sun Cities Museum of Art has ever-changing exhibits and art classes
available for interested in trying their hand at a new medium. There is an exhibit focused
on ethnic dress that is a must see.
