The town, founded in 1888, sits 35 miles west of Phoenix, and 20 miles west of Avondale and Goodyear, which are both enjoying a four-year, double-digit annual growth spurt.

At build-out, land surrounding the town could support 1 million people, according to projections by the Maricopa Association of Governments. In 1999, the population was estimated at 5,600.

Most residents have Buckeye roots going back generations. Many remember attending elementary and high school together and with city officials such as the mayor or fire chief.

Population: 6,537 (2000 census)

Location: 35 miles west of Phoenix at the confluence of the Gila and Hassayampa rivers.

Government: The City Council is composed of the mayor and six councilmembers, all on four-year terms. City Hall: (623) 386-4691.

Major Attractions: Buckeye Aquatic Center, Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Robbins Butte Wildlife Area, Sun Valley Parkway scenic drive, White Tanks and Buckeye Hills regional parks.
