The town, founded in 1888, sits 35 miles west of Phoenix, and 20 miles west of Avondale and Goodyear, which are both enjoying a four-year, double-digit annual growth spurt.

As those southwest Valley cities expand and fill, developers are turning their eyes to Buckeye. At build-out, land surrounding the town could support 1 million people, according to projections by the Maricopa Association of Governments. In 1999, the population was estimated at 5,600.

Most residents have Buckeye roots going back generations. Many remember attending elementary and high school together and with city officials such as the mayor or fire chief.
